Following God’s Call To Be Transformed

Roz Ellington
Street Outreach

Roz obeyed when she felt God tug on her heart one day, and she hasn’t been quite the same since. Listening to Moody Bible’s radio station, she heard Breakthrough’s Executive Director, Arloa Sutter, speaking about the Street Outreach Ministry. “I felt the Lord urging me to be a part of that ministry,” she says.

Breakthrough’s Street Outreach team parks an RV in a nearby west side neighborhood every Friday night. The RV provides a temporary safe haven for women who are out on the street to receive food and prayer. Breakthrough staff and volunteers also offer shelter and resources to help women gets off the streets permanently.

Roz has learned a lot about addressing the women’s needs and giving them a renewed sense of hope. Although she volunteers most every week, she says that no two encounters are the same. “Every experience is extraordinary and heart-felt and extreme.”

Volunteers like Roz pray for and minister to women who step onto the RV, and sometimes they are present when a women makes the courageous decision to begin a new life and leave the streets. In those moments, Roz and the others praise God. “We feel victorious in the Lord, and we rejoice,” she says.

Roz has been forever changed through her volunteer experiences with Breakthrough. “It has made me more compassionate about the needs of my brothers and sisters everywhere,” she reflects. “I have been on the mission field internationally for five years, but it is a different experience on the streets in your own environment. It gives you a reality check – and the passion to become an active part of the solution.”
