Ending Hunger, Restoring Dignity

Three Crosses of Calvary Church
Breakthrough Fresh Market

Nobody understands the shame that can be associated with a “handout” better than some of Breakthrough’s Fresh Market volunteers. “All of the Three Crosses of Calvary volunteers have experienced poverty or hunger either directly or indirectly,” shares Christina, a church member and fellow volunteer, “so it’s great to help an organization that uses a dignified and respectful approach to helping those in need.”

Breakthrough’s Fresh Market provides food assistance for community residents in need, and once a month, five to six volunteers from Three Crosses of Calvary help the Market run smoothly. Besides setting up and tearing down the store, they sign guests in, serve as personal shoppers and stock food items. The church volunteers also help assemble and distribute bags for senior citizens who live nearby.

“So many people come through the Fresh Market who are really appreciative for the extra help that Breakthrough provides,” says Christina. “Most people are not looking for handouts; they’re looking for help to keep their families going a little bit longer. The Fresh Market gives them hope, especially when they see the volunteers’ generosity of spirit.”

Volunteers from the Three Crosses of Calvary team enjoy sharing the love of Christ by serving others. “Volunteering at Breakthrough reminds each of us that our service to others makes a difference," shares one volunteer. "We’re helping to maintain a person’s dignity without the stigma of ‘giving charity’ that is sometimes implied in helping the less fortunate.”
