Lamar's Aunt, Wanda
This is the sixth installment of our focus on Breakthrough’s Network Model.
Lamar has received a lot of love and support
from his family, including his aunt, Wanda. “I had a lot of wonderful family and friends in my own life when I was growing up,” she
says. “There were so many who loved God and wanted the best for me. They were a big part of my life.”
Looking at her own life, Wanda believes that the positive choices she made and the support she received helped put her on track for success. She now imparts that wisdom and experience to the younger generation in her family. And she makes it a point to be active in their lives whenever possible. “I just try to spend time with Lamar and the other kids when I can. I recently attended his graduation from high school. That was a great day.”
Wanda has often taken the time to check in with Lamar and encourage him. “I’ve always told Lamar that he has the ability to make choices. He doesn’t have to accept a certain path in life. He can set his own course, and education can take him anywhere. No one can take an education away from him.”
She’s also spoken to Lamar about the pitfalls that make achievement more difficult. “We’ve talked about keeping his head on straight and not getting caught up in drugs or other things. Lamar has a lot of common sense, but it’s important to be reminded.”
Wanda encourages family members to support each other, too. “One of my sons is a senior at Morehouse College this year. He has already talked with Lamar about the college experience…what challenges and temptations to expect…how to keep on top of your work. Since they’re closer in age, I know that Lamar can relate to him in a different way that he does me.”
She’s proud of her nephew for graduating from high school and making plans to attend college this fall. “I’ve asked him to keep me informed about the good and bad. I want him to know that I’m always available to talk to.”
