Passing On The Positive
DeShaun – Bible study leader, mentor and friend
This is the seventh installment of our focus on Breakthrough’s Network Model.
While the cycle of poverty, despair and violence still grips some families in communities like East Garfield Park, there are new circles of hope emerging from the struggle. As a young man in Humboldt Park, DeShaun was affected by positive influences in his life. He continues that legacy as a mentor and friend to Lamar; now a young man with many opportunities ahead of him.
“I was blessed to have such a core group of men pouring into me as a young man. With their guidance, and ultimately by the Grace of God, I am a believer in Christ Jesus,” says DeShaun, a bank investment employee who lives in East Garfield Park with his wife.
DeShaun first met Lamar several years ago at their church. “We are a small church so we get to know each other well. At some point you begin to just hang out like a family. I have had the privilege of building a relationship with Lamar in this way.”
During college, DeShaun led a Bible study which Lamar participated in. “Lamar wanted to learn and grow in God’s Word,” says DeShaun. “He has grown tremendously over time…through Bible study, mission trips, and simply by dialoguing with other believers.”
As a friend and unofficial mentor, DeShaun sees Lamar’s strengths and weaknesses. “He has a personality that naturally attracts others, all throughout the neighborhood. Lamar connects with people from all walks of life,” says DeShaun. “One of Lamar’s great challenges is to provide a base of stability for his family. It’s a heavy role to bear and might be a difficult task, but he knows about drawing strength from Christ.”
DeShaun’s impact on Lamar is apparent. Lamar says, “Deshaun is a rock for his family, and I wish to be that person, too. With God’s love and guidance maybe I will. DeShaun is a good man and an unashamed follower of Christ, which I admire.”
