Every day, Breakthrough surrounds youth with a network of caring adults to support their growth and expand their opportunities. The relationships that youth build with these adults provide positive influence and can make a huge difference in the life of a child. Breakthrough’s youth initiatives include preschool, middle and high school academic enrichment and spiritual development activities, along with athletic programs to engage youth physically.

Breakthrough Beginners

Educators have identified early childhood education as one of the most critical necessities for preparing urban youth for academic success. Breakthrough Beginners, an early childhood education program, equips young children with a strong academic foundation for kindergarten and fosters social and emotional development in youngsters.

Nettie Bailey Student Achievement Program

Breakthrough’s after-school program focuses on teaching elementary school students essential math and literacy skills and is recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education as a 21st Century Community Learning Center.

Youth Bible Studies

Staff and volunteers conduct weekly Bible studies for youth to foster spiritual growth and life-transforming experiences.

Sports and Fitness Academy

Research shows that kids who participate in sports do better academically, develop personal discipline and learn how to get along with others.
All of our year-round sports and activities promote healthy living patterns and relationships with positive adults. This prepares our students to become more likely to succeed in post-high school education pursuits.

Arts and Science Academy

Breakthrough’s Arts and Science Academy provides developmentally appropriate and challenging opportunities promoting creativity, collaboration, innovation, career explorations and personal and spiritual growth for children, their families and the adults of East Garfield Park. Opportunities span from introductory robotics and sewing clubs for late-elementary and middle-school students to film crews, poetry and spoken word teams, and graphic design classes for high-school students.

"B.A.S.E.S." (Breakthrough's Arts and Science Exploration Spaces), are a part of our Nettie Bailey Student Achievement After School Program, and are held from 5:15-6pm Tuesday through Thursday. They are a part of our hybrid after-school programming model and assist in youth academic and behavior development. These arts and science opportunities are for K-8th grade students and include activities such as art and yoga, cooking, science experiments, and cultural enrichment.
